RFID = Radio Frequency Identification
RFID is a technology based on radio that allows each item to be recognized individually. When goods are equipped with RFID items from a box containing 50 yellow shirts and 50 red ones can be identified within a minute without even opening the box.
The technology is based on UHF (ultra high frequency) radio, which does not require any power on the side of the RFID tag (smart label), thus keeping it very small, yet powerful. Implementing RFID does not interfere with the existing EAS / Security applications as those are on a different frequency.
Components of Apparel RFID
RFID Reader
Readers can be fixed or mobile dependent on where they are used. Fixed ones often connect to antenna(s) and recognize easily large bulks of items and are used at PoS, in the stock rooms, for EAS (one option), packing tables and DC automation. Mobile RFID Readers are typically used on the shop floor as well as during transport.
RFID Databanks and software
To gain wide benefits, RFID information is stored to a databank (DB) open to all players in the supply chain and retail operations. All players can access the RFID information from their own applications (such as ERP’s etc). For most this means some level of integration to ERP or PoS system.
